England head coach Thomas Tuchel says he understands the criticism directed at him following the Three Lions’ dramatic exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting he takes full responsibility for the defeat.
England looked on course for their first World Cup final since 1966 after Anthony Gordon gave them the lead in the second half against Argentina. However, late goals from Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez completed a stunning comeback to send the defending champions into a second consecutive World Cup final.
The result has triggered widespread debate, with Tuchel facing criticism over his substitutions and England’s defensive approach during the closing stages of the match.
Speaking after the defeat, the German coach admitted that criticism is an unavoidable part of football.
“When you lose, criticism is always going to come. That’s the nature of this job,” Tuchel said.
“I made the decisions, so I take full responsibility for them. Nobody knows what would have happened if we had chosen a different path, so there’s no point dwelling on that. I accept the criticism because the decisions were mine.”
England will now take on France in the third-place playoff, but Tuchel acknowledged the fixture is one neither team wanted to be involved in.
“No player dreams of playing for third place. Everyone came here with the ambition of reaching the final and fighting for the trophy. Unfortunately, that’s no longer possible, but we still have a responsibility to finish the tournament professionally,” he said.
Despite the disappointment, Tuchel confirmed he remains committed to leading England into the next major tournament.
“My contract runs until the European Championship at home in 2028, and that remains my focus. Right now it’s difficult to think that far ahead because the emotions are still fresh, but we’ll analyse everything and come back stronger.”
England will face France in the third-place playoff, while Argentina will meet Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
