Copper Queens defender Saliya Mwanza says Zambia is determined to claim all three points against Nigeria as the two sides prepare for a crucial Group C clash at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Zambia made a dream start to the tournament by thrashing Egypt 6-0 in their opening match, while defending champions Nigeria were stunned 3-2 by Malawi in one of the biggest upsets in WAFCON history.
Despite Nigeria’s disappointing start, Mwanza believes the Super Falcons will pose an even greater challenge as they look to revive their campaign.
“We know that Nigeria will come out to try and get maximum points over us because they were beaten by Malawi, but we will be prepared for them,” Mwanza said.
“The win is now behind us. Going into Saturday against Nigeria, we are also looking for three points in that game, and they are also looking for the same, so it is not going to be an easy match. They beat us the last time, but we will not allow that again.”
The young defender also reflected on making her senior WAFCON debut, admitting she initially felt nervous before settling into the occasion.
“At first I was nervous, but I had to overcome that fear. I’m excited to play at the WAFCON; it is every player’s dream. The senior players are encouraging us young ones,” she said.
Zambia currently lead Group C with three points and a superior goal difference over second-placed Malawi following their emphatic victory over Egypt.
A win over Nigeria would secure the Copper Queens a place in the quarterfinals, while the Super Falcons must avoid another defeat to keep their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages alive.
Elsewhere in Group C, Malawi will face Egypt in the day’s earlier fixture as both teams continue their battle for qualification.
