Malawi captain Tabitha Chawinga has jokingly pleaded with Nigeria striker Asisat Oshoala not to let the Super Falcons hand the Scorchers a heavy defeat when the two teams meet at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Malawi are preparing for their maiden WAFCON appearance and have been drawn in a challenging Group C alongside Nigeria, Zambia and Egypt. The Scorchers will kick off their campaign against the record African champions on July 28 in Rabat.
Speaking during CAF’s second Stars Spotlight webinar, Chawinga said she has embraced the responsibility of guiding Malawi’s younger players as they prepare for their first taste of continental football.
The experienced forward, who has previously featured in the UEFA Women’s Champions League with Lyon, said she understands the pressure that comes with playing on the biggest stages and is helping her teammates stay composed.
“Playing in big matches is nothing new for me because I’ve played in the UEFA Women’s Champions League with Lyon. Of course, WAFCON is different, but pressure is always there, especially for young players,” Chawinga said.
“I’m encouraging the team to stay calm because this is our first WAFCON. As one of the senior players, I know there are expectations, and I’m here to help the younger players.”
Chawinga’s playful message to Oshoala
The webinar also featured some of Africa’s biggest stars, including Zambia captain Barbra Banda, Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala, South Africa’s Refiloe Jane, Ghana’s Cynthia Konlan, Egypt’s Nadine Ghazi and Tanzania’s Anastazia Katunzi.
Looking ahead to the opening fixture, Chawinga acknowledged Nigeria’s pedigree, describing the Super Falcons as one of Africa’s strongest national teams.
“Nigeria are one of the biggest teams in Africa. They have won this competition many times and are among the favourites to win it again,” she said.
“Even though this is our first WAFCON, we want to compete. Mental strength will be very important throughout the tournament.”
After Oshoala jokingly suggested that Malawi should “play with the handbrake on,” Chawinga responded with a humorous plea.
“Don’t beat us 5-0. At least make it 1-0. Tell your teammates to take it easy on us,” she joked.
Despite the light-hearted exchange, Malawi will be hoping to make a positive impression on their WAFCON debut against one of the tournament favourites before facing Egypt and Zambia in their remaining Group C fixtures.
