The Zambian government has moved to boost the morale of the Copper Queens ahead of the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) by beginning the process of settling outstanding payments owed to the players.
The announcement was made by Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts Permanent Secretary Kangwa Chileshe during a special send-off luncheon held for the national women’s team at Protea Hotel in Lusaka.
Chileshe revealed that payments to the players had already started being processed, describing the move as part of efforts to motivate the squad as they prepare to compete at one of Africa’s biggest football tournaments.
He explained that the government wants the team to focus fully on their WAFCON mission without distractions, adding that the initiative reflects continued support for the Copper Queens.
“This is to motivate you that the same government that has been truthful in the past to equalise pay is the same government that is dedicating itself to saying we want you to be motivated,” Chileshe said.
He further confirmed that he had begun approving payments and that proof of the transactions would be shared with the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) once completed.
According to Chileshe, President Hakainde Hichilema has directed the relevant authorities to ensure all outstanding obligations to players are cleared, allowing the team to concentrate on their continental assignment.
Meanwhile, FAZ president Keith Mweemba encouraged the Copper Queens to approach the tournament with confidence while maintaining respect for every opponent they face.
Zambia have been drawn in a challenging WAFCON group and the tournament also carries extra importance as it serves as a pathway to qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Mweemba urged the players to target top spot in their group and represent the country with pride.
“We are confident the team understands the importance attached to this year’s WAFCON. It is a qualifier to the World Cup. Go and represent the country with pride. We urge you not to underrate any opponents,” he said.
The FAZ president also praised the government’s continued backing and highlighted the improved preparations the team has received compared to previous WAFCON campaigns.
He described the current Copper Queens squad as Zambia’s golden generation of women’s football and believes they have the ability to achieve historic success.
“This team deserves to be where it belongs as the golden generation of the Copper Queens. This team is on a mission,” Mweemba added.
With financial concerns being addressed and preparations completed, the Copper Queens now turn their attention to the challenge ahead as they aim to make a strong impact at WAFCON.
