Zambia head coach Oswald Mutapa has praised the mentality and fighting spirit shown by his young squad despite their narrow 1-0 defeat to Zimbabwe in the Mukuru 4-Nations tournament final.
Rather than focusing on the disappointing result, Mutapa chose to underline the positives from the performance, insisting that the character displayed by his players against a more experienced Zimbabwean side was a sign of progress.
The decisive moment came late in the match when Zindonga Junior’s cross took a deflection off Kafuti Saisande in the 88th minute, handing Zimbabwe victory after a closely contested encounter.
Mutapa admitted that experience played a role in the closing stages but remained pleased with how Zambia competed throughout the match.
“It was a tough game. For me, it’s about the character and mentality the boys showed,” Mutapa said.
He added that although the result was not what Zambia wanted, the performance demonstrated that the team has a strong foundation for the future.
The coach revealed that Zambia had prepared specifically for Zimbabwe’s style of play after analysing their previous match against Botswana. The technical team focused on limiting Zimbabwe’s time and space on the ball, an approach the players successfully carried out.
Mutapa explained that against experienced teams, allowing too much freedom can be costly, but Zambia’s aggressive pressing and organisation prevented Zimbabwe from comfortably controlling the game.
The coach believes such matches are valuable learning experiences for the young squad, especially as they continue developing their decision-making and composure in important moments.
According to Mutapa, the team’s ambition extends beyond the tournament, with the current group being developed with future competitions, including the Olympic Games and the senior national team, in mind.
“We are building towards Vision 2030. This is a team for the Olympics, and some of these players have shown they can step up to Chipolopolo,” he said.
Mutapa pointed to Zambia’s historic 2012 Africa Cup of Nations triumph as an example of how patience and long-term investment in youth development can produce success.
He noted that many players from that championship-winning squad developed together from youth level before eventually achieving continental glory.
The coach also praised Mukuru for supporting the tournament and called for more investment in youth football, stressing that development programmes at U-17 and U-20 level are essential for producing future national team stars.
With continued support and proper development structures, Mutapa believes Zambia can build a mentally stronger generation capable of competing at the highest level.
