Zambian midfielder Kings Kangwa continued his excellent start to the new season by finding the net for the second game in a row, although Hapoel Be’er Sheva suffered another defeat in European competition.
Kangwa scored in Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League second qualifying round first-leg clash, but his goal was not enough to prevent Hapoel Be’er Sheva from falling to a 2-1 defeat against Icelandic champions Víkingur Reykjavík.
The 27-year-old has carried his outstanding form from last season into the new campaign. After finishing the previous season with 12 goals and nine assists in 33 appearances—a performance that earned him the Israeli Premier League Player of the Season award—Kangwa has now scored in successive matches. His latest strike followed another goal in Hapoel Be’er Sheva’s 3-1 Israeli Super Cup defeat to Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Reflecting on his latest achievement, Kangwa expressed his delight despite the disappointing result.
“Very happy to score my second goal in the UEFA competition. Used to dream of nights like this. Not the result we wanted, but it’s only the first half. We have 90 minutes more at home next week,” he wrote on his Facebook page.
Hapoel Be’er Sheva will now turn their attention to the second leg, where they will host Víkingur Reykjavík next Wednesday, hoping to overturn the one-goal deficit and secure a place in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League.
