Zambia international Patson Daka made an outstanding first appearance for Hamburger SV, scoring a goal and providing an assist as the Bundesliga club defeated German second-tier side Heidenheim 3-1 in a pre-season friendly on Saturday.
The Chipolopolo striker wasted little time making an impression after joining the club earlier this week. Daka played a key role in all three goals, first winning a penalty in the 36th minute to put HSV on course for victory.
He continued his impressive display after the break by setting up Rayan Philippe for Hamburg’s second goal in the 49th minute before capping a memorable debut with a well-taken goal of his own eight minutes later.
Speaking after the match, Daka admitted it was a special feeling to return to action after spending a lengthy period on the sidelines.
“It was good. It was tough. It’s been a long time since I played football. I think it was a good start.”
The 27-year-old also praised the warm welcome he has received from his new teammates, saying they made it easy for him to settle into the squad.
“Like I said earlier, this team, the guys, they’re amazing. They made me feel at home, so it didn’t really feel like I’ve been here for just a few days. It feels like I’ve been here for a long time.”
Despite enjoying an impressive individual debut, Daka stressed that his primary focus is helping the team succeed rather than chasing personal achievements.
“For me, what’s important is the team. I always try to do my best for the team in every way possible. It’s not about me; it’s about the team.
“If I can contribute with assists or in any other way, I’ll do it. I’m a striker, so of course I want to score goals, but I want to help in every way I can. I’m happy it was a good start, and hopefully we can build on this.”
Hamburger SV will continue their preparations for the 2026/27 Bundesliga season with another pre-season friendly against Everton on August 1, where Daka will be aiming to continue his bright start in Germany.
