Zambia international Patson Daka has officially joined German Bundesliga club Hamburger SV, signing a one-year contract with an option to extend his stay for a further season.
The 27-year-old striker completed his medical at the Athleticum training centre in Volkspark on Tuesday before linking up with his new teammates at the club’s pre-season training camp in Austria.
Hamburger SV Sporting Director Kathleen Krüger welcomed the signing, describing Daka as a player capable of making an immediate impact.
“With the signing of Patson, we have strategically strengthened our attack. He is a centre-forward who perfectly fits our requirements. He works extremely hard both in and out of possession, always puts the team first, and brings valuable international experience. We are convinced his qualities will be an immediate asset to our squad, and we are delighted to welcome him to HSV.”
Daka arrives in Germany after ending a five-year spell at Leicester City, where he joined from Austrian champions RB Salzburg in 2021.
Speaking after completing the move, the Chipolopolo captain expressed his excitement about beginning a new chapter in his career.
“I’m delighted to be here and can’t wait to get started. I’m a passionate and energetic player whose job is to score goals, and I believe that’s exactly how I can help the team.
“I watched a few HSV matches and saw an exciting team. From my first conversations with the club’s management, I felt very welcome, and everything about the project made perfect sense. The decision was easy for me.”
During his time at Leicester City, Daka made 165 appearances, scoring 29 goals and providing 18 assists across all competitions. He helped the Foxes win the FA Community Shield, played a key role in their EFL Championship title-winning campaign, and left as the club’s all-time leading scorer in European competitions with six goals.
Daka Joins Zambia’s Bundesliga History
The move sees Daka become the latest Zambian footballer to feature in the German Bundesliga, ending a lengthy wait since Christopher Katongo last played and scored in the division for Arminia Bielefeld.
Only three Zambians have previously scored in the Bundesliga:
- Christopher Katongo – 3 goals
- Andrew Sinkala – 3 goals
- Moses Sichone – 1 goal
With his pace, movement and proven eye for goal, Daka now has an opportunity to become Zambia’s highest-scoring player in Bundesliga history while helping Hamburger SV establish themselves back in Germany’s top flight after their recent return.
