Scottish-based striker Chanka Zimba has described his first appearance for the Zambia senior national team as a memorable experience despite the disappointing 5-0 defeat against world champions Argentina.
The forward was introduced in the 61st minute of the international friendly in Buenos Aires, replacing captain Fashion Sakala, and said representing his country at senior level was a proud moment.
Zimba admitted that while the result was difficult to accept, the opportunity to play against one of the world’s best teams provided valuable lessons.
“It was a big moment for me. The result wasn’t great, but it was good to get on the pitch and try to make a difference. It wasn’t meant to be today, but I’ll take a lot of learning from it,” he said.
Despite the heavy defeat, the striker praised the team’s attitude and preparation, insisting Zambia went into the match with confidence and excitement.
He believes the game could have been more competitive if the team had taken advantage of the opportunities that came their way, especially against an Argentina side that showed their quality throughout the contest.
“If we had scored, it could have been a different game. They have very good quality and they showed it. We just have to move on to the next one,” Zimba added.
The match also exposed areas where Zambia need to improve, with the striker highlighting the importance of better defensive organisation when facing teams that dominate possession.
“We need to be more compact. It’s difficult when they have so much of the ball, but we have to keep working hard. Their passing is very good, and that’s something we need to learn from,” he said.
Argentina controlled the match from the opening stages, with Lionel Messi playing a key role in the hosts’ attacking display.
Julián Álvarez opened the scoring before Messi doubled Argentina’s advantage before halftime. Nicolás Otamendi later converted from the penalty spot, while an own goal from Dominic Chanda and Valentín Barco’s late strike completed the rout.
Zambia’s best opportunity came through Kingstone Mutandwa, whose powerful long-range attempt was denied by Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.
For Zimba, however, the match represented an important step in his international career as he looks to establish himself with the Chipolopolo.
