Italian Serie A side Lecce have confirmed they are investigating the delayed return of Zambian international Lameck Banda after the winger failed to report for the start of the club’s pre-season preparations.
The Chipolopolo star was expected back with his teammates ahead of the new campaign but has yet to rejoin the squad, prompting the club to issue an official statement on the matter.
According to Lecce, Banda has informed the club that ongoing logistical and bureaucratic difficulties have prevented him from travelling back to Italy.
“Lameck Banda, who had already been called up for the resumption of sporting activities, informed the club today that the logistical and bureaucratic issues which have so far prevented his return to Italy are still unresolved,” the club said.
Club Considering Disciplinary Measures
Despite acknowledging the player’s explanation, Lecce has indicated that it will examine the circumstances surrounding Banda’s absence before deciding on the next course of action.
The Serie A outfit said it would conduct internal investigations and has not ruled out disciplinary action if it finds that the player’s contractual obligations have not been met.
“The club will carry out the necessary investigations into the circumstances cited by the player and reserves the right to adopt any appropriate measures, including disciplinary action, to safeguard the proper fulfilment of his contractual duties,” the statement added.
Transfer Speculation Continues
Banda’s absence comes amid growing speculation over his future at Lecce.
The 24-year-old has been linked with a move away from the Italian club during the current transfer window, with reports from Saudi Arabia suggesting that Al-Fateh are interested in signing the Zambia international.
Despite the transfer rumours, Banda remains under contract with Lecce until June 30, 2027, leaving the Italian club in control of his future as discussions continue.
The coming days are expected to provide greater clarity on both his return to Italy and whether he will remain at Lecce for the upcoming season.
