The Zambia U-17 Women’s National Team has booked a place at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after securing a crucial 1-1 draw against Ethiopia in the second leg of the final qualifying round.
The result saw the Copper Princesses progress with a 3-2 aggregate victory, earning Zambia a place at the global tournament for the third consecutive edition.
Playing in front of a passionate home crowd at Abebe Bikila Stadium in Addis Ababa, Zambia showed maturity and resilience to withstand Ethiopia’s pressure and complete the job away from home.
The Copper Princesses started the second half brightly and took the lead through Precious Mwewa just one minute after the restart. Her goal extended Zambia’s aggregate advantage and placed Ethiopia in a difficult position.
The hosts continued pushing for a comeback and eventually found an equaliser in the 88th minute through Mihiret Ayele Abebe. However, Zambia remained organised during the closing moments to deny Ethiopia a late winner and secure qualification.
Assistant coach Naomi Phiri praised the players for their determination and discipline throughout the tie, saying the team remained focused despite facing a challenging atmosphere away from home.
Midfielder Lillian Mwenda also credited the squad’s unity and commitment to the game plan, dedicating the qualification success to the people of Zambia.
The achievement further highlights Zambia’s growing presence in women’s youth football. Since making their debut at the tournament in 2014, the Copper Princesses have now reached three consecutive FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cups, establishing themselves as one of Africa’s most consistent teams at this level.
With qualification secured, attention will now turn to preparations for the global tournament as Zambia aims to make a stronger impact on the world stage.
